One-bedroom premium houseboats cost more but offer a private sun deck, air-conditioned bedroom and an onboard chef who will prepare fresh Kerala meals including fish curry, appam and coconut rice. Book directly through licensed operators or reputed agents to avoid touts who oversell budget boats. Alleppey (Alappuzha) is the most popular starting point, but Kumarakom and Kollam offer quieter routes.
